Alarming Rates of Suicide
Sharon Saia, MSW, LISW-S, CEAP

Last week, The Columbus Dispatch shared the sad statistics of Ohioans who have died by suicide. The report from the Ohio Department of Health shows that suicide is impacting our youngest and oldest citizens. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found the suicide rate among the U.S. working-age population (persons aged 16–64 years) increased 34%.  This population is similar to our Ohio State University employee population. The recommendations to address this alarming trend is social connectedness, reducing stigma, asking for help and access to resources. Let’s all be part of the solution and join in the Inaugural Ohio State University Out of the Darkness Campus Walk on April 4. 2020. This first walk is for all Faculty, Staff and students together to support suicide prevention in our workplace.
