Embracing Summer Wellness
Bonnie Castro, Wellcoaches Health and Well-being Coach, ACSM Exercise Physiologist, and OSU Health Plan Health Coach

Most of us tend to be more motivated and focused on wellness during the summer months. However, summer calendars also fill with vacations, social gatherings, and celebrations. It is important to remember to create balance this season to manage your overall well-being. Review the tips below to help you stay healthy and energized all summer long.

Stay Hydrated: With rising temperatures, be sure to stay hydrated by reviewing water recommendations and setting goals to ensure you are getting the right amount of water daily.

Protect Your Skin: Remember to protect the largest organ of your body by following sun-safety tips. And don’t forget the bug spray!

Engage in Movement: Take your exercise routine outdoors to help improve your physical and mental health. Try activities like hiking, pickleball, or a family bike ride to spend time outside and soak up the vitamin D.

Eat Seasonally: Summer brings the season of fresh fruits and vegetables. Take advantage of lower costs on these in-season fruits and vegetables or shop produce from local farmers markets.

Prioritize Mental Well-Being: Now is a perfect time to take a break from technology and spend time outside. Slow down as schedules free up or take that much deserved vacation for a break in your usual routine.

Rest and Recover: Sleep is important, even with more hours of daylight available to us. Create an evening routine to wind down and aim for seven to nine hours of sleep each night.

Engage in Social Connections: Summer is an exciting time for social gatherings. Take time to connect with those who bring you joy. Schedule a picnic or barbecue to build lasting memories.

To embrace summer wellness, focus on creating balance by combining relaxation, self-care, and outdoor enjoyment. Make the most of the sunshine and longer days to boost your well-being.
