Breaking Through Barriers to Physical Activity
Bonnie Wilhelm, Wellcoaches Health and Well-Being Coach; OSU Health Plan Health Coach

Do you struggle with getting motivated to engage in physical activity or find it challenging to stay consistent with being active? Many of us are familiar with movement and exercise recommendations and how physical activity or exercise can benefit us. However, with life’s challenges, it isn’t always easy to put this near the top of our to-do lists. It’s important to identify your challenges and come up with a plan that will fit your lifestyle. Here are some ways to work through challenges to help you be more active:

Seek Out Support: Choose an accountability partner; define your goals; find a workout buddy to build accountability.

Build Mental and Emotional Solutions: Remember that something is better than nothing; make a playlist or podcast to pair to your workout; track how you feel after exercise to work through mental barriers.

Research and Define Resources: Choose cost-effective options; try a class or gym membership; research resources that are available nearby and online.

Overcome Weather Challenges: Change up your routine to match the season; purchase equipment for weather elements; remember to change times of workouts to match daylight.

Once you have your routine in place and have created a personalized plan, remember to celebrate your success! Reward yourself with a new pair of athletic shoes or clothing. Try a new activity with friends such as golf, pickleball or bowling. Enjoy a long weekend getaway hiking and exploring a new location or a trip to the spa.
