Did you know that 1 in 4 (54 million) adults have arthritis? Arthritis limits normal activities and increased pain, fear of pain, and lack of knowledge of safe forms of physical activity can make it harder for people with arthritis to be physically active. However, physical activity can decrease pain and improve physical function by about 40% and may reduce healthcare costs. Adults with arthritis can also reduce their symptoms by participating in disease-management education programs.
Walk With Ease by the Arthritis Foundation is an evidence-based program developed by research and shows documented health benefits. While walking is the central activity, Walk With Ease is a multi-component program that also includes health education, stretching and strengthening exercises, and motivational strategies. Walk With Ease was specifically developed for adults with arthritis who want to be more physically active but is designed for everyone with or without arthritis.
Walk With Ease in-person group sessions generally meet three times per week for 6 weeks. Trained group exercise leaders begin each session with a pre-walk discussion covering a specified topic related to exercise and arthritis, followed by a 10 to 40-minute walk that includes a warm-up and a cool-down.
Studies show that Walk With Ease is proven to:
- Reduce the pain and discomfort of arthritis
- Increase balance, strength and walking pace
- Build confidence in your ability to be physically active
- Improve overall health
