Experience the Health Benefits of Writing Letters
Jodie Leister LPCC-S, CEAP; Ohio State Employee Assistance Program

Do you remember what it was like to get letters in the mail? Not just the cards we get on birthdays or anniversaries, but real letters that talked about everything and nothing, that had scribbled out misspelled words and handwriting that was not always legible. Over the last 20 months, the one thing that many people have all shared is a collective loneliness. We are desperate in some cases for meaningful interactions and exchanges with others.

Research tells us that the act of writing creates learning and intimacy with the subject and topic we are writing about. Research further tells us of the power of the written word and what it can do when offered freely and lovingly to others in our lives. As we transition into the dark Columbus winter, think about who in your life may need to receive a loving letter. What would you like to read in a letter from someone and how would it feel to receive it?

There are ways we can try to not engage in the collective loneliness this year. Give this a try! If you are still struggling or feel like something more may be in order, please reach out to the Ohio State Employee Assistance Program (EAP) at 800-678-6265 and get linked with the services that will help you.
