Exploring Your Self-Concept and Body Image
Jodie Leister LPCC-S, CEAP the Ohio State Employee Assistance Program

An undeniable fact for many people today is that we are all more obsessed with our appearance than we like to admit. These days we are constantly bombarded with ideas of what a body should look like, function like, or be. We are also concurrently bombarded with ideas of radical self-acceptance, body positivity, and self-love.

Our concept of how we see ourselves or our body image is complex and deeply dependent on the culture(s) and values we ascribe to as well as current influences in the media and the world at large. Understanding how all these areas play into the development of self-concepts and the messages we send overtly or covertly are incredibly important in building our personal concept of body image and personal resilience leading to a greater sense of well-being. Research also shows us intentionally developing an authentic self-concept increases personal autonomy in how we choose to express ourselves and live our daily lives.

If you are in a process of exploring your self-concept and body image, you are not alone. Join the Ohio State Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and Your Plan for Health (YP4H) on March 28 at 11:30am for a webinar discussing the ever-changing battle between body image and self-esteem focused on how to cultivate and refine thoughts, beliefs, and practices in this area of your life.
