Have you tried starting a running/walking routine but then something got in the way, knocking you off that routine? Signing up for a 5K (3.1mile) race could help you to stay consistent with a training program. The first reason is motivation. When I pay for a race, I feel more likely to stick to a training program because I am financially invested. The race provides me with a specific date that I know I need to be ready by, so it forces me to stick to my training program because I want to make sure that I am able to finish it and not waste my money.
Another reason why I love doing races is the environment. For those who have not done a 5K before, there is a lot of excitement in the air. Usually, they have great music, food and drink, cool finisher medals, and t-shirts for participating in the race. It’s very motivating to know that hundreds of other people are going through the pain of running just like you! I find that I am able to run a little faster during races than training due to all of the adrenaline. To add extra motivation, try looking for a special theme race or a race that benefits a charity that you care about.
Sometimes life can change your running goals. Some races may get rained out, an injury may occur during training, maybe you have to work on the weekends, or other unforeseen circumstances. Virtual races are becoming more and more popular due to the flexibility of being able to complete them on your own schedule. With a virtual race, you can select the theme of a race or specific cause or charity that you support to sign up for. When signing up, you have the option to complete the mileage for the race when it is most convenient for you. You get to create your own schedule and pick the race date that best works with your schedule. Most virtual races come with great looking race shirts and medals.
