In the beginning of a new year, I tend to choose a theme to focus on and weave in and out the different aspects of my life. Much like George from Seinfeld declaring “It’s the Year of George!” (oh boy, am I dating myself with that reference), Helka is declaring, “It’s the Year of being Intentional!” I want to be more present, purposeful, and deliberate in my choices to better benefit my well-being, my work, and my relationships. So, I am taking active measures to improve my physical health. I am participating in an intensive nutrition plan that focuses on identifying foods that improve my overall functioning, meal planning, and explore my relationship with food to live a more optimal life. I am also embracing the e-word…exercise. I am a Tik Tok gal and saw the weighted hula hoop and let me tell you, I got it and I am killing it!
I am continuing to make time for meditation and have noticed that I’m not so quick to react to stressors at work. I am more decisive about what I am expending my energy on. I’m also using mantras to keep me on track, like “do your work first,” “you get what you focus on,” and “work smarter, not harder.” That last one has really helped me be more open to accepting my colleague’s influence to utilize Teams and One Drive to streamline our collaborative projects.
Regarding relationships, I am making more efforts to connect with family and friends. Whether it’s setting up some time to hang out, sharing with them my gratitude that they are in my life, or even just sending them a funny Tik Tok. I’m also trying to be more present when spending time with others and “unplug” from devices in order to experience the situation without added distraction. I also reviewed our Employee Assistance Program’s 2021 Healthy Habits Relationship series to brush up on some helpful relationship habits. You can check the recordings out too and learn some helpful habits to improve your relationships with your pets, partner, and family. (Please note, there are no longer points available for viewing this past series).
So here’s to “Being Intentional” in 2022! Hopefully it brings more personal growth, better well-being, and connection.
