Mental and Physical Health
Lisa M. Borelli LISW-S, Counselor, Ohio State Employee Assistance Program

Did you know that there is a relationship between mental health and physical health?  Many PCP's and family practice doctors ask their patients not only how they are feeling physically but also mentally.  They screen for mental health issues and can also make referrals for counseling.

Professor David Goldberg of the Institute of Psychiatry, London, reports that the rate of depression in patients with a chronic disease is almost three times higher than normal.  “Depression and chronic physical illness are in reciprocal relationship with one another: not only do many chronic illnesses cause higher rates of depression, but depression has been show to antedate some chronic physical illnesses.”   Click here to learn more about the relationship between mental and physical health.
