Mental Health Awareness Workshops Available to Managers
Suzanne Vickers, LISW-S; Ohio State Employee Assistance Program

As a member of management and/or a leadership team, your roles consist of many responsibilities that could be categorized as program management and people leadership. In the role of people leadership, some of the more important aspects is to create and maintain psychological and physical safety and promote well-being in the workplace.1 Employees may face mental health issues and discuss this with you in your meetings with them. When managers learn to better identify declining mental health behaviors, address them, and provide resources, they increase the likelihood of positively impacting performance, attendance, and presentism and maintaining a safe and secure work environment for that staff member, coworkers, and patients.

The Ohio State Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offers a Mental Health Awareness training specifically for managers to assist you in identifying possible mental health issues in employees while providing resources for having these important conversations. Our goal is to help you become aware of the many resources available to employees and where to go to access those resources. In this workshop we introduce what mental health looks like and feels like as well as introduce two case studies so you can practice how to approach an employee for whom you are concerned. We introduce you to resources such as EAP manager consultations, critical incident response debriefings, and the formal management referral process.
